Noé Garcia — Unusual Sunset
Presented in the student short film selection at the Anima Festival, Unusual Sunset had already captured the hearts and minds of the audience at Courts Mais Trash back in January. This gripping energy is felt from the very first frame as we follow a child enamored with nighttime freedom, completely unaware of the dangers and terrors lurking just outside the protective walls of the family home. Without leaning fully into horror, the tense aesthetic crafted by Noé Garcia sweeps us into the whirlwind of a night haunted by murky, oozing characters. It is a genuine descent into hell, driven by an electronic soundtrack that intensifies the pervasive sense of unease running through the film. The entity pursuing the child feels deeply symbolic, while a series of animated sequences flirt with total abstraction. Through its animation, Unusual Sunset successfully places us right back at a child's eye level—terrified yet fascinated by the unknown world of the night, which is both dangerous and captivating. You experience this film more than you simply watch it, as much through the spellbinding music by VKN.MODULAR and Leo dans la Jungle as through the immersive soundscapes brought to life by Ugo Olivari. It is a rich, sensory experience with artwork that truly resonates within.
